The spatial distribution pattern of impervious water surface in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River has a high similarity with construction land. Before 2000, impervious water surface was mainly distributed in major cities such as Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Nanjing, Hefei and Hangzhou. Along with the radial expansion of impervious water surface along the big cities, the impervious water surface of small and medium-sized cities also developed rapidly. By 2010, the cities of Nanjing, Changzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou and Shanghai in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River gradually formed a contiguous pattern.
