TY - Data T1 - Biophysical permafrost map indicates ecosystem processes dominate permafrost stability in the Northern Hemisphere A1 - Ran youhua DO - 10.11888/Geocry.tpdc.271659 PY - 2022 DA - 2022-01-05 PB - National Cryosphere Desert Data Center AB - The new permafrost map of the northern hemisphere uses a rule-based GIS model to integrate the new permafrost range, climate conditions, vegetation structure, soil and topographic conditions, as well as ice rich and organic matter rich permafrost map (yedoma). Different from the previous permafrost map, according to the complex interaction between permafrost and climate and ecosystem, we divide the permafrost in the northern hemisphere into five types: climate driven, climate driven / ecosystem modification, climate driven / ecosystem protection, ecosystem driven and ecosystem protection. Excluding glaciers and lakes, the areas of these five types in the northern hemisphere are 3.66 respectively × 106km²、 eight point zero six × 106km²、 zero point six two × 106km²、 five point seven nine × 106km² And 1.63 × 106km²。 81% of the permafrost areas in the northern hemisphere are transformed, driven or protected by ecosystems, indicating that ecosystems play a leading role in the stability of permafrost in the northern hemisphere. Climate driven permafrost accounts for only 19% of the permafrost area in the northern hemisphere, mainly distributed in high Arctic and alpine areas, such as the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.
